Apex Benefits Case Study of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis:
In 2006, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis (Archdiocese), a non-profit employer with 2,600 employees was faced with another increase in its health care costs. The cost containment features inherent in the group’s managed care plan did little to limit annual increases in the cost of health care coverage. What was needed was a comprehensive approach to the management of employees’ health and a focus on making consumer-driven choices when accessing benefits through the medical plan.
With Apex Benefits Group as their consultant, the Archdiocese embarked on a multi-year program that would provide not only a consumer-driven health plan at its base, but also the tools that members would need to make the most of the plan and become partners with the employer in managing the cost of the health care plan.
In January 2007, the Archdiocese implemented a PPO-based High Deductible Health Plan with an employer funded Health Savings Account (HSA).Changing from a managed health care model to a consumer-driven model required a great deal of communication and support tools. As the 1,700 employees who participated in the plan were spread out in locations throughout Central & Southern Indiana, this became an even greater hurdle. However, through employee meetings facilitated by the Archdiocese, Apex Benefits Group and the insurance administrator, plan members began to understand how their decisions could have an impact on their costs and ultimately their employer.
